Ron Whitten has served as the Senior Editor on Architecture for Golf Digest magazine since 1985.  A graduate of the University of Nebraska and Washburn Law School, he practiced law for 12 years, primarily as a prosecutor, before joining the Golf Digest staff full time in 1990.  He is the author of five books on golf design, including the first history of golf course architecture ever published, THE GOLF COURSE (1981), and its updated version, THE ARCHITECTS OF GOLF (1993). He has twice won First Place in annual feature writing contests conducted by the Golf Writers Association of America, most recently in 2014.  For his efforts in popularizing course design to mass audiences, in 1996 Whitten was presented the Donald Ross Award, the highest honor given by the American Society of Golf Course Architects. In 2010 he was inducted into the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame. Whitten has been a golf course owner and has been involved in the design of five courses, including The Architects Golf Club in Phillipsburg, N.J., in collaboration with his friend Stephen Kay, and Erin Hills Golf Course in Wis., a collaboration with his friends Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Site of the 2011 U.S. Amateur, Erin Hills will host the 2017 U.S. Open. Whitten lives with his wife, Lynn, in Lenexa, Kansas.
