Miramar Golf Club

In 1931, Frank Gordon, the gaienses Cláudio and Mário Martins took the initiative to found a Portuguese golf club, until that time practiced almost exclusively by the numerous British colony installed in Porto.

Miramar Beach, located just ten kilometers from the Douro River, met the requirements to accommodate it. The chosen land stretched over the sandy beach, from the dune facing the chapel of Senhor da Pedra to the beginning of Praia da Aguda to the south. To the east, with the train line and the road to crossing them, the land started in the pine forests of Mira and ended in the sand of the beach, next to the sea.

Together with other enthusiasts and benefiting from the sympathy of the official entities of the municipality, it was possible in 1932 to establish the Club de Golf de Miramar, a link to the image of the first courses in Europe, where the sport began to be practiced.

From that date until now, with tight financial management and with the commitment of successive directions and associates, the club has been progressively built, with its nine competitive holes and its magnificent Club House, indispensable for the association of its members. and their families.
Over these almost 85 years of history, it has been possible to evolve from a rented field to its own, from primitive fairways and bunkers to a competitive, modern and highly challenging layout, which has received hundreds of events throughout its history, including the Opens of the years 1967 and 1968 stand out, with the participation of the best national players, but also with distinguished international players.

Frank Gordon used the famous Scottish architect Mackenzie Ross to design the initial course and build what would become one of the best nine-hole courses in the Iberian Peninsula, due to its unique location and challenging layout. Subsequently, the course was redesigned by the renowned architect Howard Swan and to date it has been subject to constant improvements and adaptations, while remaining modern and current.

The Club de Golf de Miramar celebrated 75 years of history in 2007, with 478 members, of which the impressive number of 135 members under the age of 30 stood out at the time. Since that date, the Club School has evolved very significantly and this number has increased dramatically, with more than 100 regular students. This trend not only contributes to the stability and sustainability of the sport, but also ensures to a large extent the club''s longevity.
